Nairobi to Masai Mara National Reserve

After breakfast and a briefing, drive to the world-famous Masai Mara. Arrive for lunch at the lodge, then head out on an afternoon game drive to look for the Big Five, including lion prides, elephant, leopard, cheetah, spotted hyena, hippo, Nile crocodile, giraffe, gazelle, zebra and buffalo, plus the reserve's rich birdlife. Sundowner and campfire before dinner and overnight.

Morning game drive and departure

Nairobi to Amboseli

Morning pick-up from your Nairobi hotel, residence or the airport and drive to Amboseli National Park via Mombasa Road, passing typical African savannah country dotted with local homesteads and Maasai herders grazing their cattle. Arrive in time for lunch, rest over midday, then an afternoon game drive in search of elephant, giraffe, zebra, lion, cheetah, warthog and ostrich, with Mount Kilimanjaro dominating the background. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Amboseli to Nairobi

After an early breakfast and check-out, a further game drive in search of predators and grazers, then drive back to Nairobi with drop-off at your hotel, residence or the airport in the late afternoon.

Into the safari

Morning pick-up from your Diani Beach or coastal resort and transfer by private 4x4 Land Cruiser to Tsavo East National Park. Afternoon game drives across the sprawling plains in search of elephant, lion, buffalo, cheetah, giraffe, zebra and antelope, with a lunch break at your safari lodge or tented camp. Enjoy the park's celebrated sunsets before dinner and overnight at your Tsavo East accommodation.

Morning game drive and return to the coast

Early morning game drive as the park comes to life, then breakfast at your accommodation. Head out again for lion, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and abundant birdlife, with lunch at a rustic restaurant overlooking the park. A final game drive rounds off the safari before the drive back to Diani Beach.

Mombasa to Tsavo East National Park

Hotel pick-up in Mombasa and drive to Tsavo East, entering via Bachuma Gate. Game viewing en route takes in the Kander swamps and Aruba Dam. Check in at Voi Safari Lodge for lunch and a rest, followed by an afternoon game drive. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Tsavo West National Park

Early sunrise game drive, returning for breakfast, then transfer to Tsavo West via the Tsavo River gate. Explore the park's rugged wilderness landscape with game viewing through the day.

Return to Mombasa or Diani

Early morning game drive followed by breakfast and check-out with a packed lunch. A final game drive en route before the drive back to Mombasa or Diani for hotel drop-off.

Nairobi to Masai Mara

Nairobi to Samburu

Early pick-up in Nairobi and drive north via Thika, Nyeri and the Nanyuki–Isiolo road, with a comfort stop at the equator viewpoint. Check in at the Samburu camp early afternoon, then an evening game drive before dinner and overnight.

Samburu

Early morning game drive in search of the reserve's rare northern species, returning to camp for breakfast. The afternoon is free for camp activities or an optional dip at Buffalo Springs. Evening game drive, then dinner and overnight.

Early morning game drive before breakfast, then pack and depart for Nairobi mid-morning with stops en route, arriving mid-afternoon.

Nairobi to Lake Nakuru National Park

Drive to Lake Nakuru in the Great Rift Valley, going on a game drive on arrival in search of Rothschild's giraffe, lion, leopard and python. Lunch at the lodge, then an afternoon game drive taking in the flamingo flocks and the park's 400-plus bird species. Overnight at the lodge or camp.

Full day in Lake Nakuru National Park

Early morning game drive in search of leopard, returning for breakfast. Mid-morning and afternoon at leisure by the lodge pool, followed by an evening game drive to look for both rhino species. Return before sunset.

Lake Nakuru to Nairobi

Breakfast at the camp or lodge, an optional nature walk, then the drive back to Nairobi.

Nairobi to Ol Pejeta

Depart Nairobi and drive north through tea and coffee estates to Sweetwaters Tented Camp. Visit the Chimpanzee Sanctuary, run in partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute, and the protected black rhino refuge with around 40 animals. Overnight at Sweetwaters.

Ol Pejeta

A full day at Sweetwaters with morning and evening game drives, and time to use the camp's recreational facilities in between. Dinner and overnight at Sweetwaters.

Ol Pejeta to Nairobi

Early morning game drive in the conservancy in search of the Big Five, then breakfast before the drive back to Nairobi, arriving early afternoon for hotel drop-off.

Nairobi to Masai Mara

Pick up from your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta Airport and, after a short briefing by your driver-guide, drive to the Masai Mara National Reserve. Arrive in time for lunch at the lodge, then an afternoon game drive among the late grazers, returning for campfire cocktails and dinner.

Full day game viewing in the Masai Mara

Full day game drives following the wildebeest migration groups around the Mara River. Weather permitting, witness river crossings as crocodiles hunt. Picnic lunch is taken out on the drive, with an evening sunset drive before returning to the lodge for dinner.

Masai Mara game viewing and Masai village visit

A second full day of game viewing to find anything missed. The Masai Mara hosts Kenya's largest lion prides and elephant herds; other predators include leopard, cheetah and spotted hyena, while the Mara River holds pods of hippo and Nile crocodiles. Explore Nairobi's bustling downtown district like a local on a private, full-day tour, taking in the Nairobi National Museum, the August 7th Memorial Park dedicated to victims of the 1998 bomb blast, and panoramic city views from the Kenyatta International Conference Centre rooftop. Includes hotel pickup and drop-off, all admission tickets and bottled water.

Nairobi National Museum

Begin on Museum Hill and explore Kenya's heritage through the permanent collections and ethnological exhibits, including Ahmed, the massive elephant that became a symbol of Kenya during the 1980s poaching crisis, the Kalenjin cloak made from Sykes monkey skins, and the butterfly mosaic map of Kenya. Around two hours, admission ticket included.

Kenyatta International Conference Centre and Memorial Park

Visit the iconic 28-storey building on Harambee Avenue for 360-degree panoramic views, explore the recreational grounds of Uhuru Park, and walk the Central Business District as your guide shares pre-independence Nairobi history. Optional visit to the August 7th Memorial Park and bomb blast site, whose memorial museum honours those who lost their lives.

Visit the best African craft shop in Nairobi, a converted Kikuyu house with 18 shops selling crafts, antiques and art with staff on hand to assist. Located in Karen/Langata near Karen Blixen's original farm, with views of the Ngong Hills and refreshments in the garden restaurant.

Nairobi to Masai Mara National Reserve

Met on arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and transferred to Wilson Airport for the scheduled flight to Kichwa Tembo Airstrip. The camp driver meets you on landing; check in, enjoy lunch, relax and swim, then an afternoon game drive before dinner and overnight at camp.

Depart at 0800 hours for Samburu National Reserve in the Rift Valley, arriving around 1200 hours for lunch at the lodge and time to relax. At 1530 hours, an afternoon game drive looking for rare species including gerenuk, Grevy's zebra and reticulated giraffe.

Samburu to Lake Nakuru National Park

After breakfast at 0800 hours, drive to Lake Nakuru with a brief stop at Nyahururu's Thomson's Falls, arriving at the lodge for lunch at 1200 hours. Afternoon game drive at 1530 hours viewing flamingos and around 400 bird species, with Rothschild's giraffe, buffalo and endangered black and white rhino.

Lake Nakuru to Maasai Mara Game Reserve

Depart after breakfast at 0800 hours through the Great Rift Valley to the Maasai Mara, with lunch at the lodge at 1300 hours. Afternoon game drive from 1530 hours to see resident large mammals including Maasai giraffe, buffalo and plains game.

Full day in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve

A full day devoted to searching for the big cats and viewing the famous wildebeest migration. All of the Big Five can be observed here, and over 400 bird species have been recorded including birds of prey.

Maasai Mara to Nairobi

Morning tea or coffee at 0600 hours followed by a morning game drive, or take the optional hot air balloon. Return to the lodge for breakfast at 0930 hours, with an optional authentic Maasai village visit at 1000 hours (extra cost). Amboseli to Lake Naivasha (drive time 6+ hours)

Depart Amboseli, stopping for lunch in Nairobi. Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake in the Rift Valley, hosts abundant water birds including pelicans, herons, eagles, geese and ducks, with hippos resting along the shores and wildebeest and impala grazing nearby. Enjoy a whole afternoon game drive in Ol Pejeta, which comprises grass plains, wooded grassland and evergreen thicket, with chimpanzee sanctuaries and abundant wildlife including the Big Five. Transfer in the evening to Aberdares National Park for an overnight at The Ark Forest Lodge with game viewing from the lodge.

Aberdares to Lake Nakuru National Park (drive time 3+ hours)

Naivasha to Maasai Mara (drive time 4+ hours)

Stops along the way to admire the views and shop at local curio shops, with a brief pause in Narok Town for refreshments. Check in at the lodge and have lunch, then a game drive before returning for dinner and overnight.

Leave your Nairobi hotel or the airport in the morning and drive through the Central Kenya highlands to Nyeri town, at the base of the Aberdare Ranges. Overnight from your comfortable perch above the floodlit waterhole and salt lick where, all night long, a procession of animals comes to drink. Accommodation at The Aberdare Country Club.

Aberdares to Lake Nakuru

Breakfast, then depart via Thomson's Falls, named after the Scots explorer who first saw the falls in 1884. Arrive at Lake Nakuru National Park for lunch, followed by an afternoon game drive until sunset. Overnight in Nakuru.

Lake Nakuru to Maasai Mara

Breakfast and depart for the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, the most outstanding game reserve in Kenya and home to all the Big Five. After lunch, an afternoon game drive exploring the sanctuary.

Lake Nakuru's pink flamingos

Early breakfast followed by a two-hour scenic drive through the Great Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru National Park, where you can see thousands of flamingos, rhino, Rothschild's giraffe, zebra, impala, lion and buffalo. Picnic lunch is included, and you return for afternoon tea at Lake Naivasha.

Flight to the Masai Mara

Fly from Lake Naivasha to the Masai Mara with panoramic views, then transfer to tented accommodation along the forested banks of the Mara River. Afternoon game drive with opportunities to spot lions, elephants, giraffes and zebras, followed by pre-dinner drinks and a candlelit dinner.

Safari in the Masai Mara

Morning and afternoon game drives in the Masai Mara National Reserve, with herds of grazers, lion prides and, with luck, leopards. An optional cultural visit to a Maasai homestead is available, as is a hot air balloon safari with champagne breakfast on landing.

Farewell and departure

Early morning airport pickup travelling via the Thika superhighway through pineapple plantations. After crossing the Tana River the landscape grows lusher as you ascend into the Kikuyu farmlands. Arrive at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a 360 km² not-for-profit wildlife sanctuary in Laikipia County positioned on the equator, home to the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa with approximately 100 black rhinos and the two remaining northern white rhinos relocated from the Czech Republic. The Sweet Waters Chimpanzee Sanctuary here is the only place in Kenya where chimpanzees can be seen. Dinner and overnight.

Ol Pejeta to Nakuru (drive time 4+ hours)

After breakfast, cross the Aberdare range into Lake Nakuru National Park. Wildlife includes buffalo, rhino, giraffe, zebra, antelope and lions. Lake Nakuru is famous for having the highest concentration of flamingos in the world and hosts over 300 bird species, serving as a sanctuary for both black and white rhinos alongside zebra, waterbuck, buffalo and warthog. Leopards may be seen on the branches of the fever trees. Supper at the lodge overlooking the lake.

Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara (drive time 5+ hours)

After breakfast, travel to the Masai Mara Game Reserve, arguably one of the finest game reserves in Africa. Part of the vast Serengeti plains, it is renowned for the spectacular wildebeest migration and is the true home of the Big Five: lion, elephant, leopard, rhino and Cape buffalo. Named after the Maasai people, ancestral inhabitants who remain present as warriors herding their livestock. Late afternoon game drive on arrival, with evening campfire relaxation and dinner. Nairobi to Aberdares (drive time 4+ hours)

After breakfast, drive northwards through farmlands to reach Mt Kenya and the small town of Nyeri in time for lunch. In the early afternoon, travel through the forest to a tree hotel where you stay high above the floodlit waterhole and salt lick. Frequent visitors are elephants, rhino, buffaloes and the giant forest hog. Overnight at camp or lodge.

Aberdares to Lake Nakuru National Park (drive time 3+ hours)

Today's destination is Lake Nakuru National Park, with buffalo, rhino, giraffe, zebra, antelope and the lions that prey on them, as well as vast flocks of flamingos clustered near the lake shore. Lake Nakuru is famous for having the highest concentration of flamingos in the world and is home to over three hundred bird species, and is a sanctuary for both black and white rhinos alongside zebra, waterbuck, buffalo and warthog. Leopards are sometimes seen sleeping on the horizontal branches of the fever trees. Supper is at the lodge overlooking the lake.

Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara (drive time 5+ hours)

After breakfast, drive towards the famous Masai Mara Game Reserve, arguably one of the finest game reserves in Africa. Part of the vast Serengeti plains, it is well known for its spectacular wildebeest migration and is the true home of the Big Five: lion, elephant, leopard, rhino and Cape buffalo. Its name derives from the Maasai people, the ancestral inhabitants of the area, and you may see a solitary Maasai moran herding hundreds of cows, goats and sheep.
